Nutrition is critically important during the postoperative healing period. Spine health requires adequate intake of calcium (generally 1200 mg/day) and Vitamin D (generally 1000 units/day). Vitamin C (generally 500 mg) is important for wound healing. A multivitamin is always important. Iron can help when there is any component of anemia. B complex vitamins may help provide an optimal environment for nerve healing. Ice cream, fast food, and candy bars do not heal wounds and rebuild the body. A balanced diet of protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber, and fresh vegetables is going to be the best during the postoperative healing period and preoperatively when getting ready for surgery.
